Overview
This entirely online program, offered through OntarioLearn, is designed to improve knowledge and skill levels of persons working, or wishing to work, as estimators in the construction industry. Independent contractors with little formal training and individuals wishing to enter the construction industry will benefit from this program. Graduates are employed by residential, commercial and industrial construction companies. They are also employed by major electrical, mechanical and trade contractors, or may be self-employed in this competitive industry.
Entry Requirements
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.
You do not need to apply to begin this program. Start by ensuring you meet the admission requirements listed above and then register for the courses listed on the Curriculum page when they are offered
Note: To be successful in this program, students should have a general knowledge of architectural drawings, word processing and spreadsheet software.

Curriculum
A sound mathematics and English background is important for success in this course. The student will require a good understanding of MS Word.
This course introduces the student to basic blueprint reading and common methods of construction, from soil evacuation to roof design. Legal concepts of building/planning codes and statues are discussed. Students gain a foundation of residential/commercial construction principles, and codes in practice today. The pass rate for this course is 55%.
Recommended: Basic Construction Methods and Technology - CCE100
This course is intended to explain the process of construction estimating from the contract documents to the methods of measuring quantities used in general contracting offices. This enables the student to understand the position of the estimator within the business of construction management, both in the contractor and sub-contractor's world. The course concentrates on "Taking off" methods of materials using simple residential and commercial exercises. The pass rate for this course is 55%.
Recommended CCE101
This course is intended to guide students through a proven method of cost estimating to determine material quantities and unit costs for a complete project. The course will be of interest to individuals wishing to learn about estimating in a commercial environment. Students will utilize various documents created in the workplace. The build-up and calculation of unit costs for materials, labour and equipment will studied. The pass rate for this course is 55%.
Recommended CCE102
This course will provide a student who has a basic knowledge of general contracting and estimating, additional understanding of Tender Documents for all project types and knowledge of computerized estimating and unit price control. It will provide the student with the understanding of a role in the estimating team and importance of bid management. This course will lead to the management of site, material ordering, scheduling and the cost control process.
Recommended CCE102
Students in this online course develop skills towards job site administration and documentation, layout, set up, surveying, supervision, and safety. Contract types and Construction Lien Act are discussed along with the review of the programs that are available to help in managing the jobsite. The pass rate for this course is 55%.
Program Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Apply building codes, other legal codes and industry standards to the construction process
- Apply the principles of both residential and commercial construction
- Use appropriate terminology and materials estimating tools for the construction industry
- Produce the required cost estimates for construction projects
- Establish construction schedules according to industry standards
- Evaluate a construction project schedule and cost performance
- Interpret construction documents and standards
- interpret drawings: interpret codes for concrete, steel, and timber construction
- Evaluate tender documentation
- Summarize the bid management process and its importance
- Apply relevant knowledge and skills to assist in construciton site management
Graduation/Convocation
When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October), Spring (June) and Winter (February).

Minimum Performance for Graduation
A student will be eligible to graduate from a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or graduate certificate program if they have achieved a minimum graduating GPA of 2.0.
A student will be eligible to graduate from a degree program if they have achieved a minimum graduating GPA of 2.5, which includes a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the courses in their main field of study and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in breadth courses.
Residency Requirements
A faculty of Seneca Polytechnic may recommend a student for a certificate, diploma or degree only after the student has earned a minimum of twenty-five percent of the credit for that program at Seneca.
