In the AutoCAD 3D Civil® - Essentials program, students will learn the drafting and design tools available from the AutoCAD Civil 3D® software and gain comprehensive experience with the features and benefits of AutoCAD Civil 3D®. This program is geared towards the expanding demand for technicians and designers with the working knowledge of the AutoCAD Civil 3D® software. This program will assist students in learning the techniques involved in: setting up project styles, templates, and project design data; working with Civil 3D points; creating and analyzing surfaces, model road corridors, and land parcel layouts; performing grading and volume calculation tasks and the layout of pipe networks.
Civil drafters/technicians: These individuals focus on designing civil engineering projects, such as highways, bridges, water and sewage systems, subdivisions, and site-plan projects. AutoCAD Civil 3D® is used to design, analyze, and document these types of projects.
Please note: As a Seneca student, you will receive free access to AutoCAD on your personal device with a one-year Educational license. Instructions for downloading the software will be posted by your instructor on Learn@Seneca.
The software required for the AutoCAD and Revit courses must be downloaded to each student's personal computer. Seneca strongly recommends that students use a device with a Windows operating system for these courses.
To learn more about the courses that are required for each of Seneca's AutoCAD and Revit programs, please review our Pathways Map.
Students upon satisfactory completion of this program will be prepared to seek employment as civil design technicians, civil drafters, or any entry-level drafting position using AutoCAD ®. Additionally, they may qualify for positions as:

Recommended Basic Computer skills
This course is an introduction to 2D AutoCAD, in which students learn basic AutoCAD fundamentals, including basic draw and modify commands, drawing setup procedures, layer setup, dimensioning, and plotting. Students gain hands-on experience using AutoCAD's drafting tools.
ATC111 or an introductory AutoCAD course or industry equivalent experience
This course is the advanced 2D AutoCAD, in which students continue their drafting techniques with such features as annotation scaling, hatching, blocks, attributes, tables and external references. Students draw complex objects and gain hands-on experience using AutoCAD's advanced drafting methods.
ATC111 or an introductory AutoCad course or equivalent industrial experience
This course is designed for civil engineers/technologists and surveyors who will use Civil 3D to create standardized civil engineering drafting and GIS projects. Participants complete transportation, site, sewer, storm drain and subdivision projects quickly while using the tools to dynamically link and generate updates which reduce costly errors.
Experience with internet technologies.
This introductory course takes a comprehensive survey of the fundamentals of graphic design paired with the relevant software and processes involved for print and web publishing. It is designed for those wishing to pursue a career in online and desktop design or publishing. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of; type, graphic elements, preparing digital art, working with colour and file preparation for both print and online publishing. Participants are given a comprehensive "jump-start" in working with industry standard desktop publishing and web design programs including; Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and Dreamweaver.
This hands-on course begins with the core features of photo manipulation and continues with advanced functions that focus on measurable improvements in productivity and speed. Topics include using layers to build composite images, adjusting tonality, retouching images, using filters, feathering photos, masking, colour range selection, professional retouching skills, systematic image analysis, filter technology, advanced composite images and colour models.
In this course, students obtain the requisite skills to utilize InDesign - Adobe's powerful page layout application. Using practical hands-on projects they create ads, brochures, newsletters, business cards and long documents for print and PDF distribution, apply advanced typesetting functions, control and edit documents, and manage output.
DGD100 and Photoshop knowledge is recommended
Students discuss and practice creating illustrations using strategies for easy execution. Topics covered include: drawing, typography, compound paths, special effects, three-dimensional objects, layers, masks, complex patterns, blends, effects, custom colours, transformations, transparencies and blend modes, perspectives, graphs, gradients, creating brushes and graphic styles.
MCT100 or equivalent experience.
Using extensive hands-on practical projects, students learn how to create lines and shapes, edit objects and typographical elements in Illustrator. Students create colourful designs, alter type for display heads, mask objects, use special filters and EPS files in other programs.
