Important Notice
The profession of early childhood education is one in which ongoing learning is critically important. These workshops are designed to support the Early Childhood Educator (ECE) in upgrading and enhancing their professional practice. They support the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for ECE as required by the College of Early Childhood Educators (CECE). These workshops support the legal requirements for a licensed child care program as defined by The Ministry of Education of Ontario's The Child Care and Early Years Act.
To support RECEs in their ongoing learning and support the best practice requirements of the CECE and Ministry of Education, Seneca has designed the following in-class workshops. The workshops currently cover topics from interpreting CPL requirements and how to implement them, to the ELECT document in your practice, ECE Professional Practice and Child Guidance Part I and Behavioural Guidance Techniques, with more topics to be introduced.
Students should check with the CECE to see if this workshop qualifies for their professional portfolio.
Participants are recommended to be RECEs.
Part-time Studies courses are being offered in either of the following four formats: Online, Flexible, In-person, Hybrid. Click Availability below to see current offerings.
The workshop examines the information provided by the College of ECE of Ontario (CECE) with regards to continuous professional learning, (CPL) requirements. These requirements were introduced in fall 2014 for all ECEs who wish to maintain their registration with the CECE. Workshop content will include definition of CPL, professional self-assessment and the development of a continuous professional learning portfolio.
The workshop explores the Early Learning for Every Child Today document. This document was produced by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services for curriculum planning application in early childhood education programs. As well the How Does Learning Happen? Ontario Pedagogy for Early Years document will be introduced. This document is produced through the Ministry of Education to support programs for early years.
This workshop will assist the ECE professional in determining the best practice for integrating the variety of new technology into programming. Social media, curriculum planning, email communication and internet access will be discussed. The ECE Code of Ethics, programming and communication will be evaluated within the context of the appropriate use of technology.
In this workshop, communication within the ECE practice is discussed. A variety of positive communication skills will be detailed. There will be the opportunity to problem solve communication issues with challenging families. Effective communication between the administration and staff within an ECE program is explored.
In this workshops, participants will review the legal and ethical requirements for professional practice as outlined by the College of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario and issues with professional misconduct. The Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for ECEs practicing in Ontario as developed by the College of Early Childhood Educators will be examined. As well, the requirements regarding child guidance and best practice as outlined in the Child Care and Early Years Act of Ontario will be reviewed.
Participants will examine a variety of child guidance techniques that support children's development of emotional health and social relationships. Steps discussed will include prevention, action and follow up for behaviour issues with young children. Topics include child development, reasons for children's behaviour and age appropriate actions to shape positive emotional reactions and establishing healthy social relationships. Participants will work through a variety of case studies to analyze their child guidance practices and adapt them to support positive emotional health in young children.
Upon successful completion of the program requirements, please submit a Request for Certificate of Completion Form to the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training. There is no cost for this and your Certificate of Completion will be sent to you electronically.
