Purpose
Scope
This policy applies to all full-time faculty.
Policy
1. General
- Seneca is committed to teaching excellence and high-quality programs, and this includes explicit and systematic feedback on teaching effectiveness. The Faculty Review process actively encourages the development of the individual faculty and their teaching. This policy supports teaching effectiveness by using a variety of tools and methods, including:
- student feedback questionnaires
- class observations by the chair, or designate
- peer Feedback, if applicable
- teaching Standards
- faculty reflections
- faculty portfolios.
- Faculty Review enhances and supports teaching excellence, program quality and student success.

Appendix A: Faculty Review Procedure
This faculty review process supports teaching effectiveness by using a variety of tools and methods, including:
- Student Feedback
The faculty member and chair will normally receive student feedback through Course Evaluation Survey results.
- Chair Observations
The faculty member and chair, or designate, will schedule a class visit and a follow-up meeting, at a mutually convenient time. Both the faculty member and chair, or designate, will sign any written documents.
- Peer Feedback
The faculty member may elect to participate in peer observations and provide feedback to their colleagues. The faculty member may elect to add peer feedback into their portfolio.
- Teaching Standards
The faculty member will reflect upon and provide examples of how the Teaching Standards informs their teaching.
- Faculty Portfolios
The faculty member will reflect on aspects of their teaching and use these reflections and feedback from students and their chair to develop a Professional Development Plan in collaboration with their chair.
Chairs will clearly identify the standards applied in the review process and will maintain objectivity throughout the process. Faculty and chairs will keep copies of all forms.
Probationary faculty will be evaluated each semester during their probationary period, in accordance with the Academic Employees Collective Agreement.
Non-probationary full-time faculty will be evaluated at a minimum of once every five years.
Contract faculty will receive feedback as appropriate.
