Seneca College Certificate

 

Overview

This program is designed for those individuals who plan, administer, and deliver training and education to adults in the workplace, in non profit organizations, in college settings, and in educational institutions. It is of interest to those considering new career possibilities in positions involving the training, education, and professional development of adults.

The curriculum is practical and theoretical so that the student is exposed to different learning contexts and methodologies, and the practicalities involved with program assessment, planning, development, delivery and evaluation.

Throughout the program emphasis is placed on assisting the student in acquiring the knowledge base necessary to demonstrate the competencies required of an adult educator/trainer in today's society.

This course is an introductory exploration of adult learning. Its focus is on the various processes that assist adults to pursue learning through self-directed inquiry and exploring theory within an experiential context.

Methods of Instruction

Prerequisite(s):

This course provides participants with an opportunity to practice skills of facilitating the learning process. Content focuses on a variety of interactive training techniques and skills, training equipment, resources and the facilitation of learning activities. Learning strategies available to the facilitator are explored. Actual teaching/training issues are addressed in an experiential learning mode.

Group and Team Development

Group and Team Development (formerly known as Interactive Learning Process) introduces the participants to both theory and research findings needed to understand how to help groups work effectively. Participants also learn the skills required to apply that knowledge in practical situations with the adult learner.

Student Assessment Evaluation

This course provides students with the opportunity to effectively evaluate learning and how to use meaningful assessment and evaluation tools in the classroom or workplace. Content includes the four levels of evaluation - Reaction, Learning, Transfer of Learning and Impact. The effectiveness of courses are determined by assessing and evaluating course design and instruction.

Adults With Learning Disabilities

This course will help you gain insight into the abilities, needs and issues of Adults with Learning Disabilities in an educational or training setting, and society as a whole. You gain general knowledge and awareness of the various exceptionalities with a primary focus on understanding adults with Learning Disabilities. Strategies and skills are explored so that educators/trainers can provide appropriate modifications and accommodations to course content, delivery and evaluation, to ensure that all learners have an opportunity to be successful.

IAE220
Managing a Diverse Learning Environment

Learners further explore two key aspects of managing a diverse adult learning environment. In the first section of the course, learners discover the intercultural differences in adult learning styles, preferences and educational expectations and compare these to learning in a Canadian learning environment. In the second section of the course, learners develop the capacity and competencies to recognize how diversity impacts the learning experience and develop the tools and confidence to manage and plan for the complexities that surface in such a learning environment.

Program Outcomes

The program is composed of 210 hours designed to enable the educator to:

  1. Demonstrate the competencies required of an adult educator/trainer in today's work and academic environments.
  2. Apply current principles of adult education when planning, implementing and evaluating program curriculum.
  3. Select appropriate teaching/learning strategies.
  4. Incorporate collaborative learning opportunities into curriculum.
  5. Design evaluation strategies in concert with stated learning outcomes.

Credit for Prior Learning

Upon successful completion of the 6 Excellence in Educating Adults Certificate of Completion workshops, students may be eligible for a transfer credit towards the "Introduction to Adult" (BEC910) online course in the Adult Education/Staff Training certificate.

Graduation/Convocation

When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October), Spring (June) and Winter (February).
