Due to increasing senior demographics, there is a need for retirement communities and long-term care facilities. Seneca is excited to offer this program targeting the skills necessary for administrators in this sector.

This program will be suited to those with an academic background or managerial experience in a related health or business discipline.  This competency-based curriculum will prepare you for a challenging, dynamic management career in this growing sector.

This course examines the structure of the health care system and the concept of client-centred care. The roles of government, funding and provision of health services is examined. Learn the legal responsibilities of you and your staff and how to meet the standards effectively and efficiently. Learn the basics of information systems management and the strategic use of information technology.

Financial Management of Retirement Communities

This course is designed to allow the student to identify and explore the factors that are relevant to financial decision making and budgeting. It will focus on the learner's ability to use a variety of standard problem solving tools of financial management and standard budgeting formats in both the private and not for profit sectors of the business. Emphasis will be placed on a well-developed Canadian financial infrastructure, funding and health care system.

Sales and Marketing for Retirement Communities

This course introduces the student to consumer-based services marketing and sales as applied to the Long Term Care and Retirement Communities industry. Students will define marketing and demonstrate an understanding of consumer behaviour, market segmentation, the marketing mix, application to the marketing plan, and the principles of selling.

Environmental Services in Retirement Communities
Availability
 

Environmental Services (housekeeping, laundry and maintenance) need to be managed well to ensure the successful operation of a retirement residence or long-term care facility. Being able to understand and monitor heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to offer residents comfort and to reduce costs is important. Department organization, job descriptions, resources, budgets, preventative maintenance and safe working practices will be studied.

HR and Labour Relations in Retirement Communities

The human resources framework involves obtaining and retaining competent employees. Managers require knowledge of competitive wage scales, pay equity and benefit packages. Positive employee relations can be achieved through job satisfaction, conflict resolution and compliance with collective agreements and appropriate legislation. Administrators/General Managers must meet the challenge of the increasing number and complexity of government regulations and the diversity of the workforce.

Healthy Adult Aging

This course examines the normal physiological, psychological, social and spiritual changes affecting aging adults using the Holistic Approach to wellness. Normal physiological and anatomical changes, as well as the dysfunctional effects of common health problems will be examined. Students will learn common medical terminology and charting techniques related to aging clients.

This course examines the structure of the health care system and the concept of resident-centred care. Content will include operational management, leadership, medication administration, abuse prevention, infection control, residence safety and risk, home and residence care. Students are expected to utilize course concepts when analyzing issues. The current changes in health delivery, organizational structures, and implications for nursing practices are also addressed.

Senior Management for Retirement Communities

Prerequisite(s):

RCM701, RCM702, RCM703, RCM704, RCM705, RCM706 and RCM707

This course looks at how managing a Retirement Community Organization involves different factors - planning, organizing, leading and controlling of resources to achieve goals effectively and efficiently. Resources may include people, inventory, information, skills and financial capital. This course looks at emerging trends in management and legislation and how these impact the administration of Retirement Communities.

Program Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Describe the structure of the health care system and the role of government, funding, and legislation applicable to long-term care and retirement residences.
  2. Practice accounting principles that are relevant to financial decision making and budgeting.
  3. Understand the principles of sales and marketing as they apply to the long-term care and retirement communities industry.
  4. Discuss the environment services required to operate a well-managed retirement or long-term care residence.
  5. Explain human resources management principles including health and safety and labour relations.
  6. Identify the holistic approach to meet the psychological, physiological, social and spiritual needs of the elderly.
  7. Describe the structures, regulations and legal issues for the Canadian health care system in long-term care and retirement communities.
  8. Explain nutritional care for seniors, food service operations and the MOH dietary standards.
  9. Discuss the role of senior management in retirement communities as it applies to staff, inventory, information, financial capital, best practices, the community and Bill 21, Ontario Retirement Homes Act.

Graduation/Convocation

When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October), Spring (June) and Winter (February).
