Foundations to Resource Consulting

Subject Description
This course introduces students to early learning pedagogy and play-based strategies as the cornerstones of supporting children with special needs. Through a lens of curriculum principles that guide inclusive early learning programs, students will examine and analyze developmental characteristics of children in order to recommend program adaptations and modifications that build on children's strengths. In addition, students will utilize observation skills and screening tools in order to recommend centre policies and practices that promote meaningful and maximum early learning program participation.

One credit in the ECE Resource Consulting graduate certificate.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Describe early learning pedagogy and play-based strategies that support children's development and diverse abilities.
2. Analyze developmental characteristics of children in order to understand their diverse abilities.
3. Recommend adaptations and modifications that enhance strengths and abilities for full program inclusion.
4. Assess, observe and select screening tools to identify children's strengths and abilities. 
5. Create and maintain partnerships with families, agency/childcare centre staff and community partners, and recommend community resources to provide family-centered and community-based supports and services for neurodivergent children.
6. Identify the role of a resource consultant in early learning settings.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
